Hello. all files/dirs inside tp/data must be writable for 'apache' (web) user. All *.php files must be at least 644 for script's work or 755 to be able to update via admin area.

Hi Shawn, there is no any difference between manual or mass update, same methods used. Anyway each of them trying to set 777 perms after update to be able make update next time. So now update each copy and run lock.php via ssh.
If you installed new version over the old vesrion, perhaps you have IP whitelist settings there. If so, delete/rename tp/data/settings/auth_ip_white_list.set
